Draft 1 part 7 #WFFL #FFdraft #2014sfb

Hey gang, sorry for the delay but slow drafts and stomach flu's bow to no man or woman. So since we last talked I have actually finished 3 slow drafts on the MFL site. One #MFL10, one #PhenomsFF and of course the #2014SFB . I will now list my final roster for this team and again point out, no DST or PK, 4 Flex one of which can be QB, 1pt PPR and .2 pt PPC (point per carry) and passing TD's are 4pts. The starting roster is 11 with 11 bench.

QB's: T. Brady NE, A. Smith KC, E.J. Manuel BUF

RB's: G. Bernard CIN, D. Sproles PHI, C. Johnson NYJ, C. Michael SEA, A. Bradshaw IND, J McKinnon MIN, J White NE, L Taliaferro BAL, D. Archer PIT

WR's: D. Thomas DEN, M. Floyd ARI, M Colston NOS, H. Nicks IND, R. Woods BUF, B. LaFell NE, J. Abbrederis GBP

TE's: V. Davis SF, T. Eiffert CIN, R. Rodgers GBP

Obviously all the usual drafting situations apply: you can't always get what you want, the player you've been waiting to sneakily grab with your next pick is stolen from you by the &@#$ picking right before you, etc, etc. However, In this type of draft I kept to my basic strategy if not always my specific player targets. I went with a three layered approach. I wanted someone I consider a top tier talent for 2014 in my #1 spots at each positions. Demaryius at WR, Geo at RB, Brady at QB and Davis at TE (keeping in mind your scoring rules). I want the rest of my starters to be solid reliable veterans that I feel I can count on for solid numbers week in and week out. These guys are the backbone of my team: Alex Smith, C. Johnson, Colston, Hicks and Eiffert. Not super exciting but will start every week. My third tier is a mix of guys depending on who's available that could have breakout seasons, rising stars, promising rookies in good situations, injury upside guys and a few solid bye week backups.  With a roster this big you can afford to take some chances and try to get some hits off pre-training camp gossip and rumors and watch those waiver wires as camp and pre-season gets underway.

This is the first time I have had three #earlydrafts before training camps even started and I've found it very interesting. I thought I'd be frustrated by the lack of information but I'm finding it to be a great way to prep for the season. I am getting familiar with the players and especially the rookies earlier than ever. I'm doing better at remembering names, teams and situations. I'm using the time to get better prepared for when my keeper and dynasty leagues start up. As tedious as the slow drafts can be it has given me time to better prepare for the season and the motivation by already having a vested interest in many players. I admit, I think It's been good for me and may prove to be good for my league success. I'll be playing in 15-17 leagues in 2014, being the Commissioner of more than half of them. I don't play for money or power, I play for fun and to be part of a great game and community. I've been playing #fantasyfootball since 2006 and doubt I'll be stopping anytime soon.

Draft 1 part 6 #WFFL #FFdraft #2014sfb

Sorry about yesterday .... not that a lot happened but for some reason my post never quite made it. I think it had to do with the tiny kitten asleep on my keyboard. I was baby sitting.

So the slooowww draft keeps on rumbling much like Ahmad Bradshaw. Except now instead of working on just the one draft I am now involved in 3. While still classified as slow I think the other two will be somewhat faster as one is Dynasty so it is a rookie draft and the rounds are limited. The third is an #MF10 league (I had to try one) and it seems to be moving along pretty well. Plus it has an 8 hour pick clock not 24 like the #2014SFB has so it can't get too hung up .... repeatedly.

So today is day 8 of the #2014SFB Invitational. I think I left off at round 13 Ahmad Bradshaw, in round 14 I picked up Robert Woods, round 15 Tyler Eiffert, and in round 16, Jerrick McKinnon. Impossibly there are still 6 more rounds left. I think I have about 8-10 players left in my pick list. Once they are gone I'm not sure what the heck I'll do. I suppose I could get lucky and my final picks may not be on anyone else's list but ....... Oh well.

Draft 1 part 4 #WFFL #FFdraft #2014sfb

It's 3pm on Friday and we've only advanced two rounds in the last 27 hours. Patience, Patience, Patience. It is giving me time to study both my roster and those of my opponents better than I ever have before. I'm doing a much better job of predicting my opponents picks and therefore planning my own, which is a good thing. I'm also doing a much better job of tracking bye weeks so I don't have too much overlap, also a good thing. In standard live drafts I often lose track of both of those things.

So anyway my two latest picks were Hakeem Knicks WR2, Ind. and E.J. Manuel, QB1, Buf. At most Knicks will be a flex and EJ a bye week fill in/upside play. I have a few players that are my attempts at catching lightning in a bottle. If they don't do much I won't be surprised but there is and outside chance something crazy could happen and they could have a magic season. E.J. could have a crazy breakout year and bump Alex Smith from my QB2 slot. If Turbin disappoints in camp then Michael could end up backing up Lynch and who knows what could happen from there. Long shots ...... maybe, but upside can make champions. Especially in an "experts" league. Playing it safe just won't cut it in this league. Solid anchors in your #1 spots are important but so are upside plays and risk taking with a roster this deep. You've got to do your homework and have a little luck.

So 5 days and 12 picks down, 10 to go (11 starters, 11 bench - all offense). Once the draft finishes I will do a final summary of my team and ask for reactions. Until then I will continue with the daily updates.

Draft 1 part 3 #WFFL #FFdraft #2014sfb

It's been another 24 hours and we have gotten through 3 more rounds. I keep telling myself patience is a virtue. It's not helping much. Bottom line is that after 3 1/2 days we are almost halfway through the draft. The 3 picks I've added are: M. Colston (WR), V. Davis (TE), and C. Michael (RB). So I stand with 2QBs, 4RBs, 3WRs, & 1TE, I'm still missing 1 Flex starter and my 11 bench spots. Since it is a 2 QB league I'll probably pick up another upside qb if the right guy falls to me later. I'll likely grab one or two more TE's if the right ones fall. That would leave 9 spots. Depending on talent available maybe a 5-6 WR's and 3-4 RB's. I'll have to see how things unfold.

The roster and scoring rules in this league are so different than my other leagues that I don't mind sharing my draft and final roster when I'm done. With offensive scoring only, no DST and not only 1 PPR (point per reception) but also .4 PPC (points per carry) it really changes the player values from most standard leagues. It makes value based drafting really important.

I'll check in again tomorrow with an update. I encourage your comments, both positive and negative. Thanks

Draft 1 post 2 #wffl #fantasyfootball #ffdrafting @WomenNFL

So yesterday I described the basics of the slow draft I'm currently part of, a so called "FF Semi-Pro" Invitational League. Basically a bunch of FF writers, bloggers, podcasters and a few fans. I just find it interesting to see what other people, that are presumably paying attention to all the things you are supposed to be aware of, are doing. Maybe I can find a sleeper theses guys all like that I didn't know about and bring that knowledge into the rest of my drafts. Or maybe there is an over hyped player that most of them are avoiding till the very late rounds or not drafting at all. Just more pieces to the puzzle that is your draft season. I personally am playing in 15 leagues at the moment. I have my second draft on Monday then I'll have a break until Sunday August 3rd. That's when the #WFFL drafts begin, and then continue throughout the month of August. Be sure you request your invitations to play in our Women's Fantasy Football Leagues asap to secure your team a spot. Email Joyce at info.wffl.us and request an invitation to any of our available leagues. I can help you decide what might be right for you (redraft, keeper, dynasty, ppr, auction, etc.) if you are unsure.

Anyway, So in this slow draft we started last Monday at Midnight and it is now Wednesday just about noon and we are towards the end of round 7. The draft is a serpentine and I'm at the 6 spot on the way up and the 7 on the way back. I have Picked 7 of my 22 players. See my last post for a reminder of the starting positions. I have:
QB: Tom Brady, Alex Smith
RB: Gio Bernard, Chris Johnson, Darren Sproles
WR: Demaryius Thomas, Michael Floyd
TE:
So that's what I've done so far. Keep in mind it's a 2 QB league and PPR. 12 teams. I missed on the top TE's so I'll wait a while. I'm pretty happy so far. maybe I could have waited on Floyd but ..... who knows. I'll keep you posted. Let me know how you think I did.

Draft #1

I have officially kicked off my fantasy football draft season. My first draft began Monday and it is a sloooowww draft (hate it). It is expected to run 10-12 days. Basically people submit their picks as soon as they can. Some people take 5 minutes, some people take 10 hours. Four Conferences of Six Divisions with 12 teams each. Basically a gazillion teams but I'm only competing directly against by division of 12.

The Teams are PPR redraft with an unusual roster. 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 (QB/RB/WR/TE Flex), and 3 (RB/WR/TE Flex), 11 B. All offense all the time, 11 starters. Pretty wild!  With a team like this I like to try to roster 3 QB's and 3 TE's then split the rest more or less even between RB's and WR's. My one's (QB1, RB1, etc) I go for best player available just trying to get as much top talent in my ones as possible. My two's QB2, RB2, WR2, need to be reliable veterans that can be counted on for a solid performance. My three's I look for the younger guys that could be approaching a breakout year and after that it's a mix of a few reliable backup guys and the rest complete upside flyers and rookies. After all, you gotta gamble some times right?
