Drafting is done, let the season begin.

Drafting is done. Am I the only one a little surprised by how my overall draft picture shook out? With 14 actively managed leagues I decided to do a bit of analysis on my own drafting trends. I looked at how many times out of my 14 leagues I drafted players to be my starters in each roster spot. The percentages represent in how many of my drafts these players were selected as starters. Here is what it tells me.

QB's: I love my top 3 guys but in my book Brees (36%) and Brady (36%) are still ahead of Luck (21%) for fantasy production. Obviously I'm a believer in Brady having a big bounce back year (maybe even top 5). As a backup QB I'm not really concentrating on a specific guy but Palmer and Smith are the only ones I have in more than one league. I don't draft bu QB's in all my lineups, only those that are either 2 QB leagues or those with deep benches. In my Keeper and Dynasty leagues Bortles was my only real upside play at the position.

WR's: So many players, so widely spread. WR was one of the deepest positions in this years draft so I have a great variety of players but there are still trends in my top starter targets. My favorite play at WR1 is Demaryius Thomas (29%) followed by Jordy Nelson and Dez Bryant. I shied away from Julio Jones this year due to his foot issues, perhaps too much so.  My WR2 spots are primarily populated by Michael Floyd at a whopping 71%, I see him as a breakout star and a great value in most drafts. At WR3 my heaviest play is on Golden Tate on 57% of my teams, another great value later in drafts. Seriously, the #2 WR in a high powered passing offense with their #1WR likely being double covered, it was a no brainer to me. WR's rookies with upside now or in the future were very attractive to me particularly Brandin Cooks (50%), Kelvin Benjamin (29%) and Jordan Matthews (21%).

RB's: In each of my RB spots there is a clear and significant difference and between my 3 most drafted players. For instance my RB1, my most drafted Gio Bernard I have on 43% of my leagues, my next most drafted as an RB1 is Andre Ellington on 29% of my leagues and then my 3rd choice, Leveon Bell drops in on only 14% of my rosters. The same sort of drops occur in my drafting of my RB2 and RB Flex positions. When drafting for my RB upside fliers I most often selected my favorite NFL backup RB Christine Michael (50%) who I believe will have fantasy value in the second half of the season and will eventually take over as his teams RB1. Often undrafted I see him as a great value on Keeper and Dynasty leagues. (Honorary mention to Knile Davis who is in a very similar position to be a solid back beginning in 2015). My 2nd and 3rd RB fliers are both rookies with, I believe, great future value: Carlos Hyde (36%), Devonte Freeman (29%).

TE's: Rob Gronkowski, let me count the ways (71%), the best there is when healthy and right now he's healthy and I'm all in. If I miss on Gronk in the draft I shoot for Julius Thomas when possible (21%). I just think Jimmy Graham is too expensive as a top 10 pick. When both are healthy Gronk is better and he has a better situation (less competition for targets). His strong, hard hitting play makes him susceptible to injuries which keeps him from being drafted in the first round which equals good value with huge upside for fantasy players. With great risk can come great reward. I'll always draft a solid TE2 with Gronk as my #1 but 10 games of Gronk will still beat 16 games of most Tight ends and many WR's. OK I'll stop now with the Gronk love. As far as upside rookie TE fliers I'm, all in on Travis Kelce (36%) for Keeper and Dynasty Leagues.

In the cases of Kickers and Defenses I'm not one to draft these positions early so I don't get the top drafted players but I do have a clear favorite in each of these positions. I think the NE Patriots DST (64%) is a great value and will finish in the top 5 for 2014. My preferred kicker is Steven Hauschka (29%) when available near the end of the draft.

Overall my drafts have shown I have definite trends that could be my undoing or hopefully bring me to the playoffs. My love of rookie upside plays, My loyalty to the New England Patriots and their players, and my fanaticism with a couple guys like Rob Gronkowski, Michael Floyd, Christine Michael and the Patriots DST each of whom I own in at least half of my leagues. The definition of Boom or Bust players for me. I have a few regrets as I wish I has gotten Cordarrelle Patterson in more than 1 league and I was hoping to get a few shares of Eddie Lacy but you can't have everything.  All in all I am looking forward to a really fun and exciting season both as a fantasy football player and as an NFL fan. I may not win but I'll have a great time trying. I hope you feel the same about your fantasy rosters.
Go Pats

Draft 1 part 7 #WFFL #FFdraft #2014sfb

Hey gang, sorry for the delay but slow drafts and stomach flu's bow to no man or woman. So since we last talked I have actually finished 3 slow drafts on the MFL site. One #MFL10, one #PhenomsFF and of course the #2014SFB . I will now list my final roster for this team and again point out, no DST or PK, 4 Flex one of which can be QB, 1pt PPR and .2 pt PPC (point per carry) and passing TD's are 4pts. The starting roster is 11 with 11 bench.

QB's: T. Brady NE, A. Smith KC, E.J. Manuel BUF

RB's: G. Bernard CIN, D. Sproles PHI, C. Johnson NYJ, C. Michael SEA, A. Bradshaw IND, J McKinnon MIN, J White NE, L Taliaferro BAL, D. Archer PIT

WR's: D. Thomas DEN, M. Floyd ARI, M Colston NOS, H. Nicks IND, R. Woods BUF, B. LaFell NE, J. Abbrederis GBP

TE's: V. Davis SF, T. Eiffert CIN, R. Rodgers GBP

Obviously all the usual drafting situations apply: you can't always get what you want, the player you've been waiting to sneakily grab with your next pick is stolen from you by the &@#$ picking right before you, etc, etc. However, In this type of draft I kept to my basic strategy if not always my specific player targets. I went with a three layered approach. I wanted someone I consider a top tier talent for 2014 in my #1 spots at each positions. Demaryius at WR, Geo at RB, Brady at QB and Davis at TE (keeping in mind your scoring rules). I want the rest of my starters to be solid reliable veterans that I feel I can count on for solid numbers week in and week out. These guys are the backbone of my team: Alex Smith, C. Johnson, Colston, Hicks and Eiffert. Not super exciting but will start every week. My third tier is a mix of guys depending on who's available that could have breakout seasons, rising stars, promising rookies in good situations, injury upside guys and a few solid bye week backups.  With a roster this big you can afford to take some chances and try to get some hits off pre-training camp gossip and rumors and watch those waiver wires as camp and pre-season gets underway.

This is the first time I have had three #earlydrafts before training camps even started and I've found it very interesting. I thought I'd be frustrated by the lack of information but I'm finding it to be a great way to prep for the season. I am getting familiar with the players and especially the rookies earlier than ever. I'm doing better at remembering names, teams and situations. I'm using the time to get better prepared for when my keeper and dynasty leagues start up. As tedious as the slow drafts can be it has given me time to better prepare for the season and the motivation by already having a vested interest in many players. I admit, I think It's been good for me and may prove to be good for my league success. I'll be playing in 15-17 leagues in 2014, being the Commissioner of more than half of them. I don't play for money or power, I play for fun and to be part of a great game and community. I've been playing #fantasyfootball since 2006 and doubt I'll be stopping anytime soon.

Draft 1 part 6 #WFFL #FFdraft #2014sfb

Sorry about yesterday .... not that a lot happened but for some reason my post never quite made it. I think it had to do with the tiny kitten asleep on my keyboard. I was baby sitting.

So the slooowww draft keeps on rumbling much like Ahmad Bradshaw. Except now instead of working on just the one draft I am now involved in 3. While still classified as slow I think the other two will be somewhat faster as one is Dynasty so it is a rookie draft and the rounds are limited. The third is an #MF10 league (I had to try one) and it seems to be moving along pretty well. Plus it has an 8 hour pick clock not 24 like the #2014SFB has so it can't get too hung up .... repeatedly.

So today is day 8 of the #2014SFB Invitational. I think I left off at round 13 Ahmad Bradshaw, in round 14 I picked up Robert Woods, round 15 Tyler Eiffert, and in round 16, Jerrick McKinnon. Impossibly there are still 6 more rounds left. I think I have about 8-10 players left in my pick list. Once they are gone I'm not sure what the heck I'll do. I suppose I could get lucky and my final picks may not be on anyone else's list but ....... Oh well.
